2nd Scientific Workshop
of International PhD Studies BIOMACRO
2nd Scientific Workshop of International PhD Studies (Bio)molecules - Structure and Function (MSD-BIOMACRO) was held in the Scientific Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Vienna from 6th to 8th May 2005.
The International PhD Studies BIOMACRO aims on education of young scientists through their interdisciplinary development in the field of natural sciences and by creating atmosphere of international cooperation. Lecturers are the world-recognized specialists in the field of different natural sciences, such as polymer sciences, biotechnology, biochemistry, material sciences, as well as medicine and pharmacy. The lecturers have many years of teaching experience and work in the leading scientific institutes.
Representatives from the research groups from the Centre of Polymer Chemistry of Polish Academy of Sciences, Jagiellonian University, Macromolecular Chemistry Institute of Romanian Academy of Sciences in Iasi and Universities in Bologna, Muenster and Vienna participated in the workshop.
The meeting was opened by Prof. M. A. Herman – managing director of the Scientific Centre. Prof. M. Kowalczuk – director of the Centre of Polymer Chemistry and Prof. J. Silberring – coordinator of the MSD BIOMACRO welcomed the participitants. The meeting began with two interdisciplinary lectures “Introduction to phosphorylation analysis" by Simone Koenig (Muenster, Germany).” and “From simple molecules to complex supramolecular systems.” by Prof. Bogdan C. Simionescu (Iasi, Romania). Prof. Mariastella Scandola (Bologna, Italy) had a talk “Structure – Property Relations in Polymer Synthesised by Enzyme Catalysis.”. Students’ presented short oral communications, describing the aims of their PhD theses and results of experiments: Dana Suflet, Gabrielle Charlotte Chitanu (Iasi, Romania) discussed their data on “Phosphorylated polysaccharides”, Anna Bierczynska-Krzysik, Sang Ung Kang, J.Silberring, G.Lubec (Vienna, Austria and Cracow, Poland) described “Hydrophobic proteins - a key challenge in today’s proteomics research.”. Virginia Epure (Iasi, Romania) presented “Siloxane containing polymers for drug encapsulating nanoparticles.”; Ismaela Foltran (Bologna, Italy) showed “Blends of isotactic bacterial poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) with atactic poly(D,L)lactic acid (PLA)”; Micha³ Kawalec (Zabrze, Poland) presented “Effect of Selected Reaction Conditions on Anionic Polymerization of b-Butyrolactone” The last presentation was given by Laslo Sipos (Zabrze, Poland) “Synthesis of Nitric Oxide Releasing Aspirin Derivatives”. Dr. Sipos is a fellow of the Centre of Excellence BIOMAHE together with Prof. Mariastella Scandola and Prof. Bogdan C. Simionescu.
Round table disscusion focused on the future activity of MSD BIOMACRO. The students presented their opinions and expectations concerning the form of the workshop. The Scientific Board and the lecturers discussed the best possible arrangement of the future meetings, and the optimal way for the transfer of knowledge. The discussion was supported by Laslo Sipos and Andrzej Wanic (Zabrze, Poland), who emphasized new perspectives and possibilities as well as problems in a modern world of science. During discussion the lecturers gave some advices to the students concerning the formal part of presentations.
The workshop was closed by Prof. M. A. Herman who confirmed his invitation to the next meetings in Vienna and further cooperation of the Scientific Centre. The Director mentioned that annual meetings should be a permanent activity arranged in the Scientific Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Vienna. In a common opinion of the Scientific Board and the lecturers summing up the second workshop, it is a very strong need to continue such form of the interdisciplinary international PhD studies.
